Photographing Forbes Tate Partners’ “Science of Economic Growth” Event in Washington, D.C.
On the evening of June 3, 2025, I had the honor of photographing The Science of Economic Growth, an event hosted by Forbes Tate Partners in partnership with The Science Coalition. Held at the Rayburn House Office Building in downtown Washington, D.C., the event brought together Members of Congress, university leaders, economists, and science advocates to spotlight how federally funded research serves as a powerful driver of economic growth across the country.
As an event photographer who regularly documents public policy conversations, university receptions, and nonprofit gatherings in the D.C. area, this was one of those evenings that reminded me why thoughtful photography matters. The energy in the room wasn’t just social—it was purposeful. The discussions were forward-looking, the atmosphere was collegial, and the guest list was as influential as it was intellectually curious.
In this post, I’ll share what it was like to photograph the evening from start to finish, how I approached capturing both the human connection and the big ideas, and why this event stood out as a model for how mission-driven storytelling can translate into visual impact.
What The Science of Economic Growth Is All About
The Science of Economic Growth is more than just a networking event—it’s an opportunity to make the case that investment in scientific research is an investment in America’s future economic health.
Led by The Science Coalition—a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization representing over 50 of the nation’s leading public research universities—the event aimed to elevate the link between federally funded scientific discovery and real-world outcomes like job creation, innovation, and local economic resilience. The Coalition’s mission is to ensure sustained, robust federal funding for fundamental scientific research, primarily through agencies like the NSF, NIH, DOE, and NASA.
The evening featured discussions and remarks from public officials, research advocates, and university leaders who illustrated how basic research can spark new industries, support American competitiveness, and create well-paying jobs in communities across the country. It was an occasion for coalition-building, idea-sharing, and showing that economic progress and scientific advancement go hand in hand.
VIP Guests: Rep. Brian Babin and Mike Haridopolos
Two of the most prominent guests of the evening were Rep. Brian Babin (R-TX) and Mike Haridopolos, former President of the Florida Senate. Their presence underscored the bipartisan support for the role science and research play in shaping economic opportunity.
Rep. Babin, who represents a district home to NASA’s Johnson Space Center, has long been a vocal supporter of STEM investment, space innovation, and the practical applications of science policy. I captured several images of him speaking with university leaders and research advocates about current legislative priorities and the national innovation strategy. His remarks at the event were focused, passionate, and aligned with the mission of The Science Coalition.
Mike Haridopolos, meanwhile, brought his experience in state government to the table, reflecting on how research universities serve as economic engines not only in Florida but across the U.S. I photographed him in conversation with university presidents and policy leaders, sharing insights from both his academic and legislative background.
Photographing VIPs requires a mix of discretion and readiness—you want to stay out of the way, but also be close enough to capture key moments. I worked with the event staff to ensure we documented their participation thoroughly and naturally, blending posed group shots with candid documentation.
Setting the Tone: Evening Energy and Elegant Design
I arrived early to photograph the space before it filled: branded signage, beautifully arranged bar stations, soft uplighting, and thoughtfully designed program materials—all of which helped set the visual tone.
The atmosphere was both polished and approachable, which I aimed to reflect in the photos. People were dressed in business attire, but the mood was relaxed, even celebratory. The layout of the space allowed for easy movement, which meant I could weave through conversations and capture those spontaneous moments that give events their heart.
Capturing the Conversation: The Program and Speakers
After a welcome from the team at Forbes Tate Partners and opening remarks from The Science Coalition, the evening’s programming turned to short presentations that explored specific ways federally funded research translates into economic growth.
The speakers included senior leaders from research universities, economic advisors, and longtime science policy advocates. The discussion covered everything from AI and workforce development to the CHIPS and Science Act and the importance of building bipartisan coalitions for innovation funding.
Photographing the panel required balancing technical precision with timing. I captured expressive close-ups of speakers, alternating with wider shots of audience reactions. What I look for in these moments is movement—gestures, engagement, shared laughter, or moments of pause. Even in a static setup, you can capture a sense of energy and exchange.
Natural, Candid, and Connected: The Networking Moments
One of the strengths of this event was how naturally guests transitioned from the formal program into informal discussion. As the program ended, the room shifted into a lively networking reception, with attendees staying to connect over drinks and light bites well into the evening.
This is where I leaned most heavily into candid photography—capturing two people leaning in over a deep conversation, small groups forming and reforming, and smiles exchanged across the room. I always find these to be some of the most important photos in a final gallery because they showcase the real relationships being formed and the culture of the event.
Editing, Delivery, and What Clients Value
For events like these, a quick turnaround is essential. I delivered a set of social-media-ready highlight images within 24 hours so that The Science Coalition and Forbes Tate Partners could share recaps while the event was still fresh in people’s minds. The full edited gallery was delivered within three business days, organized by category: arrivals, networking, speakers, branding, and VIPs.
My editing style for policy events is clean, true-to-life, and consistent. I focus on skin tone accuracy, preserving the warmth of evening light, and ensuring sharpness and clarity throughout. These images are often used in polished professional contexts, so subtle retouching and attention to detail are a must.
Final Reflections
The Science of Economic Growth was an excellent example of how public policy, science advocacy, and professional networking can come together in a way that’s both meaningful and memorable. The Science Coalition continues to play a vital role in communicating why research matters—not just to scientists and academics, but to communities, economies, and future generations.
Forbes Tate Partners executed the event beautifully. From planning to production, the evening was seamless and intentional. It was an honor to document the event, and I left not just with a full memory card, but a renewed appreciation for the people working every day to advance progress through knowledge.
If you’re planning a policy event, panel discussion, or reception in Washington, D.C., and want images that reflect not just who attended but why it mattered, I’d love to work with you.
