As a Washington DC event photographer, I’ve captured countless speakers, and I know how important it is for you to look your best on stage and in photos. Here are six tips to help you shine during your presentation:
1. Stick to Solid Colors. Solid-colored outfits photograph better and ensure you always look polished. If you choose patterns, keep them subtle to avoid distractions.
2. Count with Two Hands. Many speakers use one hand to count, but the thumb-and-pointer combo for “1” and “2” can look awkward, even like a gesture you didn’t intend. Instead, use American Sign Language numbers, with your index finger as “1” and your middle finger as “2,” similar to a peace sign.

3. Use Palms-Up Gestures. Speaking with your palms facing up conveys openness, honesty, and trustworthiness—qualities every speaker wants to project.
4. Hide Water Bottles with Labels. Plastic water bottles, especially those with labels, can be visually distracting. Place them out of sight—on the floor or inside the podium. If you have a plain, on-brand cup, it’s fine to leave it visible.
5. Ditch the Name Badge. As the speaker, your name is already known, and badges can look out of place in photos. Remove yours before taking the stage.

6. Look Up and Engage. When you look up and out at the audience, photographers can capture dynamic, flattering angles. Avoid reading directly from your notes whenever possible to keep your focus on the crowd.
By following these tips, you’ll not only enhance your stage presence but also ensure you look fantastic in event photos.
